SUMMARY:Annwen Roberts Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Annwen Roberts is a young improvising violinist from Lutruwita/Tasmania whose musical roots are in jazz and folk\, utilising the timbral and textural qualities of the instrument used in folk and gypsy jazz to create a new lead voice. Studying at the V.C.A. over the last four years\, she has combined these influences to create a whirlwind of lyrical and intense improvised music. Her new quintet leans more into melodies and forms derived from Irish folk music\, combined with interlocking improvisation and jazz harmony. She will perform new music from her upcoming release with the band comprised of Alex Siderov (drums) Tristan Meffre (tenor sax)\, Nick Gregory (guitar). and Claire Aboguelis (bass). This will be the last performance of this music before recording her next release\, which is an EP about Annwen’s cat Moocow\, who went missing and was recovered. The quintet will also play newer music\, and tunes from Roberts’ first release\, Sky Omens.  \n“Roberts’ distinctive compositions create ample space for each contributor to shine through the intricately layered clouds\, both as accompanists and soloists.” – Helen Svoboda

SUMMARY:Joshua Moshe - Erez project
DESCRIPTION:Erez\, the cedar tree\, stands tall and deeply rooted\, bearing witness to generations of stories\, and song. \nLed by award-winning Melbourne saxophonist and composer Joshua Moshe\, Erez presents original contemporary jazz arrangements of Jewish folk songs\, Niggunim\, and melodies from across the Jewish diaspora. \nReimagined through the language of improvisation\, these traditions become open spaces for interaction\, exploration\, and contemporary expression while maintaining deep respect for the source material. Drawing from Ashkenazi\, Sephardi\, and Mizrahi musical traditions\, Erez moves fluidly between meditative passages\, rhythmic interplay\, and expansive improvisation. \nRather than presenting these songs in fixed or historical forms\, the ensemble approaches them as living musical material allowing old melodies to evolve\, transform\, and speak in the present through the language of contemporary jazz. Joining Joshua is an exceptional quintet of collaborators featuring Gideon Preiss on piano\, Jonathan Skovron on electric guitar\, Simon Starr on double bass\, and Daniel Farrugia on drums\, each bringing their own distinctive voice to this deeply collaborative and improvisation-driven music. \nPresented by the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative

SUMMARY:Oehlers/Grabowsky/Williamson/Svoboda/Beck (Perth) - Premiere
DESCRIPTION:This new ensemble brings together Jamie Oehlers\, widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest tenor saxophonists\, and three of his long-time collaborators in pianist Paul Grabowsky\, trumpeter Paul Williamson\, and drummer Dave Beck\, with one long-anticipated addition\, bassist Helen Svoboda. This new ensemble brings together Jamie Oehlers\, widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest tenor saxophonists\, and three of his long-time collaborators in pianist Paul Grabowsky\, trumpeter Paul Williamson\, and drummer Dave Beck\, with one long-anticipated addition\, bassist Helen Svoboda. \nEver since she arrived on the Melbourne scene\, Jamie has long considered her one of the most compelling voices in contemporary improvisation\, and this project is their first opportunity to perform together. Jamie\, Dave and the two Pauls have been performing and recording together for over 25 years\, winning multiple Bell Awards\, Limelight Awards and ARIAs along the way. \nWhat unites them is a common philosophy—that music is most powerful when it comes from a genuine and individual place. Together\, their distinct perspectives combine into something unpredictable and vital\, sometimes subtle\, other times ferocious. \nThis performance will feature original compositions by Jamie that move from hypnotic modal grooves and free improvisations\, to intimate ballads and intense swingers. \nPresented by the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative

SUMMARY:WAYPEOPLE (New Zealand/Australia) - Debut
DESCRIPTION:(co-presented by the MJC) \n‘Baxendale shapes a musical space where composition and improvisation move side by side…the ensemble feels fully alive\, horns circling\, drums gathering force and the guzheng scattering bright cascades of notes through the music.’ –13th Floor    \nWellington-based saxophonist and composer Jake Baxendale unites some of Aotearoa and Australia’s leading jazz and contemporary musicians for Waypeople\, a luminous new album on the Earshift label\, inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin’s translation of the Tao Te Ching. \nDrawing from jazz and Chinese classical music\, Waypeople is music about letting go of ego\, embracing contradiction\, and finding flow. Rooted in the Taoist principle of wu-wei – doing by not doing – the ensemble performs with collective trust and lyrical storytelling\, moving seamlessly between meditative intimacy and free improvisation.  Across ten pieces\, journey through the Tao’s many voices – mystical\, playful\, rebellious. Folk-like melodies give way to open\, spacious arrangements that feel at once familiar and distinct. From the tender ‘Mindful of Little Things’ to the explosive ‘Being Different\,’ the ensemble transforms the timeless Taoist philosophy of harmony\, balance\, and paradox into sound. \nThe result is a work of shimmering beauty\, grounded in jazz but alive with the rhythm of ancient poetry and the pulse of everyday life.  \nThe septet comprises Jake Baxendale (alto saxophone\, bass clarinet)\, Chelsea Prastiti (vocals)\, Jia Ling (guzheng)\, Melbourne’s Cheryl Durongkisitpul (alto saxophone)\, the Sydney pair of Luke Sweeting (piano) and Maximillian Alduca (double bass)\, with Tim Geldens (drums).           \n

SUMMARY:Mia Barham Trio
DESCRIPTION:Mia Barham is a Melbourne-based saxophonist\, flautist and composer whose music blends lyrical improvisation with rich\, atmospheric composition. Drawing on influences from both jazz and classical traditions\, her work explores sound\, landscape and storytelling through improvisation.  \nShe has released several original projects\, including Earth Songs\, Inwards and Where The Mountains Echo My Footsteps\, which have been featured on ABC Jazz and performed at prominent Melbourne venues such as The Jazzlab and Tempo Rubato. Her music often reflects a deep connection to the natural world\, using melody and texture to evoke shifting environments and emotional landscapes.  \nEarlier this year with the generous support of the Keith and Elisabeth Murdoch Travelling Fellow\, Barham travelled to the Arctic as part of an international expeditionary residency\, spending time in remote Arctic regions across Norway\, Finland and Iceland. Experiences from this journey—its vast landscapes\, fragile ecosystems and unique soundscapes\, culminated in nine compositions which Barham recorded at the prestigious MasterKey Studios in Reykjavik\, Iceland\, with local Siggi String Quartet. Mia Barham continues to emerge as a thoughtful and distinctive voice in Australia’s contemporary jazz scene. \nMia Barham (alto saxophone\, flute and live electronics)\, Daniel Waddingham (guitar) and Ben Ingvarson (kalimba and percussion).

DESCRIPTION:Ashley Ballat is an exciting voice emerging in Melbourne/Naarm\, leading her experimental band ASHES with dynamic trumpet playing\, electronics and new compositions. ASHES has cultivated a distinct and analogous language over recent years from playing together regularly. \nThis group brings to life Ballat’s compositions\, whose eclectic aesthetic amalgamates music from the incredible Australian Jazz scene\, ECM records\, American Free Jazz\, Ambient\, Folk and hint of Metal. Together the band coalesce acoustic sounds with electronics to create thick soundscapes full of texture\, colour\, and mood. Moving between lamenting melodies\, dense fiery fury and sparse\, delicately restrained improvisation\, this band’s energy is unique. \nFeaturing Ashley Ballat (trumpet and FX); Dan Waddingham (guitar); Monty Shnier (double bass); and\, Ollie Cox (drums).

SUMMARY:Julian Banks Quartet - debut
DESCRIPTION:The Julian Banks Quartet brings together some of Melbourne’s most creative improvisers in a group that is both fiery and fluid. Led by tenor saxophonist and composer Julian Banks\, the quartet explores original compositions that carry echoes of the jazz tradition while redefining it through a distinctly contemporary lens. \nThe music balances spontaneity with structure\, allowing for deep listening\, bold interplay\, and moments of raw intensity. With Joe Talia on drums\, James Gilligan on bass\, and Louis King on guitar\, the group weaves rich harmonic textures and lyrical melodies into a sound that is unmistakably their own.

SUMMARY:Laurence Pike Trio (Sydney) – 'Possible Utopias for Jazz Quintet' Album Launch + Niran Dasika (solo)
DESCRIPTION:Sydney drummer/composer/producer Laurence Pike launches his fifth solo album Possible Utopias for Jazz Quintet\, joined by pianist Novak Manojlovic and saxophonist Jack Stoneham. One of the leading figures of Australia’s creative music community\, Pike has a long history of colouring outside the lines\, not just in his solo recordings—including four albums for the Leaf label between 2018 and 2024—but also in Warp Records alumni PVT; Szun Waves (alongside saxophonist Jack Wyllie and Border Community’s Luke Abbott); two acclaimed duo recordings with legendary pianist Mike Nock; Triosk\, which recorded an album with Jan Jelinek in 2003; and avant-punk titans Liars\, whom he joined in late 2018. \nOf Possible Utopias for Jazz Quintet\, Pike says\, “My loose concept was: What does music sound like when the expectations of late capitalism are removed from it? How might a jazz musician from an idealised culture of the future\, or even another world\, utilise musical language when the conventions of style and marketing are no longer a factor in music making?” \nThat inquiry\, he says\, connects to his “guiding principle: that the purpose of music is to access something bigger than the individual\, and reveal a sense of possibility and freedom in the world to the listener. To create an understanding that the future can be something other than what we imagined or expect\, even unconsciously.” \nPossible Utopias for Jazz Quintet is a point in a continuum\, a voice in a conversation\, a question with no obvious answer: How can the search for otherness in music manifest something true about ourselves? – Laurence Pike (drums/electronics)\, Novak Manojlovic (piano) and Jack Stoneham (alto saxophone). \n\nTrumpeter Niran Dasika’s live solo performances have explored an expanding sonic world of live sampling\, synthesisers\, drum machines and lo-fi electronica described as “…wide-ranging and ruminative\, filled with contemplation and quietude… a predominant sense of stillness present throughout\, of time barely advancing” (Dingo Magazine).

SUMMARY:Umar Zakaria’s “Aslibop” ensemble – premiere
DESCRIPTION:“Aslibop” is a bold new approach to improvisation combining the intricate melodic traditions of bebop and Malay asli music\, developed over years of dedicated research by Malay bassist Umar Zakaria into the musical culture of his Singaporean Malay heritage. The Aslibop Ensemble extends the bounds of both jazz and Malay improvisational worlds by exploring their experimental concepts throughout Umar’s original Malay-themed compositions and arrangements. \nTheir performance will present a delicate dance of the familiar with the unfamiliar\, interweaving distant yet complementary wisdoms to discover a new musical perspective with a sound of its own. Featuring Flora Carbo (alto saxophone)\, Andy Sugg (tenor saxophone)\, Yemo Wang (guitar)\, Umar Zakaria (double bass)\, Kyrie Anderson (drums) and Qamar Baba\n(percussion)

SUMMARY:ABI LEE’S Beyond\, Below\, and Above
DESCRIPTION:Beyond\, Below\, and Above is an improvising trio of Abi Lee (piano)\, Julien Wilson (saxophone)\, and Dylan van der Schyff (drums/percussion). Curated by Lee\, their self-titled album is part of Lee’s ongoing research in structured improvisation. This unique collaboration between internationally established improvisers across Canada\, Korea/NZ\, and Australia is one of the most exciting collaborations in Naarm. Van der Schyff’s delicate conversational approach\, Wilson’s uplifting sound\, and Lee’s bold and narrative way of improvising bring surprises in the trio’s performances as they effortlessly weave in and out of free improvisation. Lee’s cultivating way of storytelling shows her influences from Ornette Coleman\, Kris Davis\, and Tim Berne.

SUMMARY:Matt Hoyne's SLOW POKE
DESCRIPTION:Impressive emerging guitarist Matt Hoyne’s latest project is Slow Poke\, which makes music slowly; not necessarily slow music but music that takes its time\, in no rush to prove itself. This trio is an outlet for exploring melody\, texture and space more deeply; with a repertoire of simple original songs and some re-imaginings of music by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Rufus Wainwright. An ambling take on the jazz guitar trio\, Slow Poke features the immeasurable talents of Tamara Murphy on double bass and Ronny Ferella on drums.

SUMMARY:The Three Seas (Sydney) | Debut/Album Launch
DESCRIPTION:Formed in Santiniketan\, West Bengal\, in 2009\, The Three Seas grew out of an all-night jam between Australian saxophonist Matt Keegan and local musicians Raju Das Baul and Deo Ashis Mothey and Kolkata-based drummer Gaurab ‘Gaboo” Chatterjee. Over 15 years\, the group has evolved into one of the most distinctive cross-cultural ensembles in contemporary music. Their previous albums — Haveli (2013)\, Fathers\, Sons & Brothers (2017)\, and Afterlife (2022) —earned acclaim from The Sydney Morning Herald\, OzAsia Festival\, Edinburgh Fringe Review\, and The Times of India\, who praised their sound as “a rare sound of joy.”  \nThe Three Seas return with Antahkarana\, a luminous meeting of Baul mysticism\, Himalayan folk\, rock and dub\, recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in the UK. The album fuses ancient devotional poetry with hypnotic grooves and global improvisation\, uniting Raju Das Baul (lead vocals\, khamak)\, Deo Ashis Mothey (vocals\, dotora\, esraj\, guitar)\, Gaurab Chatterjee (vocals\, drums\, dupki\, guitar)\, Brendan Clark (electric bass\, dotora) and Matt Keegan (baritone saxophone\, harmonium)\, with Hilary Geddes (electric guitar). While The Three Seas have toured Europe extensively and performed at the 2018 Wangaratta Festival\, this is their long-overdue Melbourne debut.

SUMMARY:Delay 45 (Sydney) | Album launch
DESCRIPTION:“The pleasure of discovering this music—unfolding so calmly\, so secretly—will inevitably draw you back\, because it remains\, at its core\, distinctly unexpected.” – bestofjazz.org \nThe fourth album release from Sydney’s Delay 45\, I’ll Go Where You Go showcases their distinctive voice\, shaped by years of close collaboration\, friendship and deep musical trust. Drawing on a wide palette of influences ranging from hip hop and minimalism to contemporary jazz and free improvisation\, the album features mostly short motifs\, melodies and forms that provide the platform for dynamic textural interplay. The result is that the band’s collective musical identity comes to the fore\, a fine balance between precision and openness\, where structure dissolves into spontaneity and familiarity gives way to exploration. Individually agile and collectively unified\, the members of Delay 45 bring finesse\, creativity\, and emotional depth to every track. With a friendship that dates back to their high school years\,  \nDelay 45 perform with a rare cohesion and sensitivity. This album is a celebration of that shared history. They have performed at many of Australia’s leading venues and festivals\, including the Sydney Opera House\, Phoenix Central Park\, Melbourne Recital Centre\, and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.  Delay 45 are led by trumpeter Tom Avgenicos\, in close collaboration with pianist Roshan Kumarage\, bassist Dave Quinn and drummer Ashley Stoneham. \n“a bold new chapter in Australian jazz”. – The Sydney Morning Herald \n“Once in a generation” – Limelight Magazine

SUMMARY:Multi-Stable Cycles | Debut
DESCRIPTION:Multi-Stable Cycles combines elements of traditional Guinean music with Guinean-born master drummer Mohamed Camara and his wife and long-time collaborator Anna Camara\, and the jazz vocabulary and deep understanding of micro-rhythmic and polyrhythmic structures explored by Maddison Carter and Christopher Hale. \nWith Christopher’s roots in flamenco and jazz\, combined with his studies in the Korean rhythm system hohup\, and Maddison’s jazz background and studies in polytempo\, the two will exemplify the rhythmic complexity and freedom that Anna and Mohamed bring\, and open the music to a harmonically rich and dynamic improvisatory space. Given the limits of the balafon’s tonality\, the music will introduce poly-chords and harmonic structures not typical of traditional guinean music\, as well as the vision for layered polyrhythmic structures that are multi-stable and have cascading and overlapping resolutions. \nMusicians and instrumentation are Mohamed Camara (voice\, kora\, balafon\, djembe\, and dun duns)\, Anna Camara (balafon and dun duns)\, Christopher Hale (acoustic bass guitar)\, Maddison Carter (drum kit). \nVisit www.maddisoncarter.com

SUMMARY:Onur Puza Quartet | Album launch
DESCRIPTION:Onur is a Melbourne-based guitarist\, composer\, and educator whose dynamic career began in Izmir\, Turkey. He has performed at major jazz festivals across Turkey and Europe\, collaborated with leading regional artists\, and composed music for his band\, as well as original scores for film and television. His passion for contemporary music\, post-bop\, and folk traditions has drawn him into diverse musical projects\, all of which contribute to the development of his own musical voice. \nSince relocating to Melbourne in early 2018\, Onur has been performing his music at leading venues such as The JazzLab and Melbourne Recital Centre. Mulberry Tree gathers seven pieces from across two decades of his composing career. With the exception of Two Hours and Why Not\, every track was born in Melbourne. His deep interest in 20th-century composers\, folk melodies\, and post-bop jazz shapes these works in different ways — from melody and harmony to rhythmic language. Recorded at Newmarket studios in two days\, the album features some of Australia’s most acclaimed jazz musicians — Mat Jodrell (trumpet)\, Philip Rex (double bass)\, and Felix Bloxsom (drums) — a band with over two years of shared musical history.

SUMMARY:Hector Harley Quartet - album launch
DESCRIPTION:Tenor saxophonist Hector Harley debuted his new quartet with the MJC in July 2024\, and co-led Jazzalenko in 2025. He returns with his quartet to launch their first album as a group\, Refuge\, featuring in-demand “next gen” musicians James Bowers (piano)\, Monty Shnier (double bass) and Luke Andresen (drums). Hector combines strong melodies with subtle harmonic shifts to create a rich musical landscape\, allowing soloists ample room to express their musicality whilst staying true to the essence of each piece. Hector’s quartet will be playing newly released music which was born out of the introspective nature of composition and musical practice\, as well as some select pieces from Hector’s first album\, Mansfield (2022). Unlike Mansfield\, which explored the musical possibilities of a chordless quartet (trombone\, tenor saxophone\, double bass and drums)\, Hector’s new quartet features music specifically written for a chordal quartet and will be performing works inspired by luminaries such as Ben van Gelder\, Joel Ross\, and Kurt Rosenwinkel.
