SUMMARY:Muller/Magnusson Project (Adelaide/Melbourne)
DESCRIPTION:Co-winners of the 2000 National Jazz Guitar Award at Wangaratta\, Melbourne-based Stephen Magnusson and Sydney-based James Muller collaborated for a premiere performance of original music for the MJC in January 2012\, one of the highlights of that year. They are two highly awarded and recognised talents in Australian jazz\, versatile and distinctive. While still in his 20s Muller had already won the 2000 ARIA & Mo awards\, 2004 MCA Freedman Fellowship and shared the 2000 National Jazz Guitar Award. He was the recent recipient of a $100\,000 two-year Australia Council Fellowship. Magnusson won the $30\,000 Melbourne Music Prize in 2013\, while his last release Magnet (on LP and CD)\, won the 2013 ‘Bell’ Australian Jazz Award for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year. Muller has recently released his latest album\, Neurotica\, while Magnusson is recording with his Kinfolk project. After an acclaimed appearance at the Wangaratta Festival\, they will again collaborate with bass guitarist Christopher Hale and drummer Danny Fischer. See www.mag.net.au \n“Magnusson and Muller co-led a specially assembled quartet\, their distinctive approaches to the guitar producing music that alternately shone and swaggered with distortion-flecked grit”. – Jessica Nicholas\, The Sydney Morning Herald\, November 4\, 2014

SUMMARY:Nock/Magnusson/Wilson (Sydney/Melbourne)
DESCRIPTION:Pianist/composer Mike Nock\, the recipient of the 2009 ‘Bell’ Australian Jazz Awards ‘Hall of Fame’ award\, has enjoyed an amazingly fertile 50-year international career. Not one to rest on his laurels\, Nock stays ‘musically fresh’ by working with younger musicians\, and taking musical ‘chances’. One example was the premiere for the MJC in July 2012 of this bass-less and drummer-less collaboration with two of his favourite Melbourne musicians: tenor saxophonist Julien Wilson and guitarist Steve Magnusson. With Nock on piano and keyboards\, they produced a memorable concert of spontaneous and creative music making as part of the 2013 Wangaratta Festival\, and earned critical acclaim for their 2014 Sydney concert. \n“Nock made the music more playful\, dense\, dramatic and unpredictable. When Nock turned to synthesiser – an instrument to which he\, too\, brings a unique approach\, but very seldom plays – the combination with the guitar made the whole sound world suddenly more capricious and marvellously intangible. It was disorienting in the best sense\, and therefore both magical and exhilarating”. – John Shand\, The Sydney Morning Herald\, December 14\, 2014

SUMMARY:Mike Nock (Sydney) & Allan Browne (Solo & Duo)
DESCRIPTION:PREMIERE \nSydney-based international pianist/composer Mike Nock has produced several great albums of solo piano over the past three decades on US\, European\, Australian and NZ labels\, the last one being Touch (Birdland). He also has a history of duo recordings with drummers\, including Open Door with NZ’s Frank Gibson and a recent duo recording in Oslo with Lawrence Pike. Last year Nock collaborated in a duo with drummer Allan Browne for the first time. Nock will perform a combination of solo piano and duo in the intimate setting of Bennetts Lane. Turning 75 later this year\, his illustrious career (including almost 25 years in the U.S)\, has been documented in the biographical book\, Serious Fun: The Life and Music of Mike Nock\, by Norman Meehan (Victoria University Press).\n \n“Two of the country’s most significant – and most beloved – jazz figures on stage (in) their first-ever duo encounter (produced) exquisite empathy. Spontaneous dialogues swung so soulfully\, or were so gorgeously lyrical.” – Jessica Nicholas THE AGE\, January 24\, 2014

SUMMARY:Blow (Hobart/Melbourne)
DESCRIPTION:Now based in Tasmania\, drummer Ted Vining has been an important figure on the Melbourne for over 50 years. He recorded with Brian Brown\, Alan Lee\, John Sangster and Don Burrows\, and toured Europe with Brown in 1978\, sharing the bill with drum legends Elvin Jones and Max Roach. As well as being known for his strong sense of swing\, Vining is important for forming the long-running ensemble Musiikki Oy (renamed as Blow in 2000) in the early 1980s in Brisbane. The current edition of Blow features Peter Harper (woodwinds) and Vining\, with Ian Dixon (flugelhorn)\, Bob Sedergreen (piano/keyboards)\, and Gareth Hill (bass). They will deliver their trademark high-energy open explorations and interplay on some of their quite accessible originals. \n“Drummer Ted Vining and pianist Bob Sedergreen have never left you in any doubt that their music has heart. Vining has often literally shouted it at you\, with rambunctious cymbal crashes and reckless punctuations. These two Melbourne stalwarts continue to galvanise other players with their energy and sheer joy in making music.” – John Shand\, The Sydney Morning Herald. December 14\, 2014.

SUMMARY:Impressions (Hobart/Melbourne)
DESCRIPTION:Now based in Hobart\, veteran drummer Ted Vining is an important figure in jazz circles for forming two long-running ensembles: the Ted Vining Trio (1970-2006) and Musiikki Oy (renamed as Blow in 2000). With the passing of bassist Barry Buckley\, the Trio became “Impressions”\, with younger bassist Gareth Hill joining Bob Sedergreen (piano) and Vining\, who have a 40-year association. Impressions has maintained a great deal of the trademark interplay\, humour and swing of its predecessor on both standards and some originals.

SUMMARY:Grabowsky/Guerrini/Schauble
DESCRIPTION:DEBUT \nThe trio of Paul Grabowsky (piano)\, Mirko Guerrini (tenor saxophone)\, Niko Schauble (drums) was born casually to perform at the Bernie McGann Benefit concert in late 2013. It was immediately clear that a special connection happened when these three musicians started to play together. So clear that\, Gerry Koster (then on ABC Radio)\, decided to immediately record the band for his ABC program. The Trio plays all-original music composed by the three musicians. The main characteristic of this band is the amazing interplay that they reach during the performance. The compositions are a territory yet to be explored every night\, and any direction one musician decides to take will be followed by the others. Niko Schauble is one of the most creative drummers in Australia\, and has a long association with Paul Grabowsky\, who has recent solo and sextet albums released on ABC Jazz. Since moving to Melbourne\, Italian saxophonist Guerrini has impressed with the depth and authority of his playing in a range of genres. \n“The imaginative work by Guerrini\, Grabowsky and Schauble throughout the concert would have been a joy to behold”  – Ausjazz.net

Their latest release Wave Rider was nominated for four awards in 2014 (Bell\, ARIA\, AIR and Victoria Genre) winning the Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Australian Modern Jazz Album.   \nVisit www.andreakellerpiano.com.au \n“It is only when one hears music this brave and fantastically new that one is hit – yes: an intake of breath\, a stab of joy and a little shiver of fear – with the realisation that there are still new languages to be heard\, new seas to cross. And it just reaffirms one’s faith in jazz\, art and human courage that little sweet bit more.” –
Review of Wave Rider by John Hardaker\, australianjazz.net\, November 27\, 2013.

SUMMARY:Panorama Brasil
DESCRIPTION:Panorama Brasil draws on the diverse musical landscape of Brazil: music with influences from the arid interior\, the Amazonian basin\, and the streets of Rio and Salvador. Panorama Brasil was formed by drummer/composer Alastair Kerr\, one of Australia’s leading exponents of Brazilian percussion. Kerr is known for his work with groups such as The Doug de Vries Trio\, and Sexteto Zona Sul\, and leads this group focusing on Brazilian music and new compositions. \nOver the past three years\, Panorama Brasil have presented a wide range of Brazilian music\, including Stone Flower: A Jobim Tribute. They performed Kerr’s suite The Archer & the Dancer at the 2013 Melbourne International Jazz Festival. For this MJC performance\, they will be playing selections from that suite\, as well as new music by Kerr\, influenced by his studies of the ceremonial drumming of Candomblé. Featuring Asha Henfry (flute)\, Alistair Parsons (trombone)\, Matt Boden (piano)\, Jorge Albuquerque (bass)\, and Alastair Kerr (drums/percussion). \nVisit www.panoramadobrasil.com

SUMMARY:Rob Burke Sextet
DESCRIPTION:CD Launch \nSaxophonist Rob Burke recorded a CD  in New York last July with bassist Mark Helias and drummer Nasheet Waits –  both musicians considered archetypal improvisers on the New York scene –  together with Melbourne colleagues Paul Williamson (trumpet)\, Jordan Murray (trombone) and Paul Grabowsky (piano). The concept of the album was based on original compositions that informed free improvisation. The overarching theme being the ‘power of the idea’ with spontaneous improvisations that were perceived to be genuinely ‘in the moment’ as distinct from pre-conceived material.  Burke\, Williamson\, Murray\, and Grabowksy will be joined for this performance by bassist Marty Holoubek and drummer Dave Beck.

SUMMARY:DONUT
DESCRIPTION:The younger sextet of Eugene Ball (trumpet)\, Ian Whitehurst (tenor sax)\, Jordan Murray (trombone)\, Colin Hopkins (piano)\, Matt Clohesy (acoustic bass) and Dave Beck (drums) were together for several years\, developing into a popular group with a strong book of originals by Ball and Murray (as well as some “Jazz Messengers” classics). With several monthly weekend residencies at Bennetts Lane throughout this year\, their development has been even further enhanced. \nDonut was first fried in the late nineties; an aural snack for late-night revellers at Bennetts Lane\, back when the club presented a second band from midnight into the wee smalls. The band’s teeth were cut on the iconic repertoire of Blakey’s Jazz Messengers\, but over almost ten years grew to include originals and new arrangements by all members. \nNearly two decades on\, with fewer sprinkles and flaking icing\, the delectable sweet treats are excited to reconvene on their old stomping ground. Founding Donut-sters Eugene Ball (trumpet)\, David Beck (drums)\, Jordan Murray (trombone) and Ian Whitehurst (tenor saxophone) will be joined on this auspicious occasion by Sam Keevers (piano) and Tamara Murphy (double bass).

SUMMARY:Jex Saarelaht Quartet feat. Jonathan Zwartz (Sydney)
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2009 for the Stonnington Jazz Festival\, the quartet of saxophonist Julien Wilson\, bassist Jonathan Zwartz\, drummer Niko Schäuble and pianist Jex Saarelaht\, found an immediate chemistry not always easily achieved with a band made up of bandleaders\, as evidenced on the recording of that debut gig.  Fiveways\, was recorded live at Chapel Off Chapel\, and released on Jazzhead. Despite rare opportunities to perform together\, they continue to enjoy that connection when the chance does arise\, playing a mix of original pieces from all four members and the odd not-so-standard composition from the jazz canon.

SUMMARY:Remco Keijzer Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Expatriate Dutch tenor saxophonist/composer Remco Keijzer has bought a wealth of experience and a positive approach to the local scene via his various music projects. After graduating at the Manhattan School of Music and the Conservatory of Amsterdam in 2003 Keijzer has been experimenting with many different formations playing mostly original material. Rooted in the jazz tradition\, this particular group is easily one of the most soulful incarnations.  As the band explores its original music\, it delivers powerful moods\, yet never loosing the connection with the members of the audience. The classic setting of the saxophone-piano quartet\, backed by an energetic\, textured rhythm section\, offer a platform for adventurous improvisation and experimentation with form and melody. \nThis Quartet features pianist Joe O’Connor (winner of the 2013 National Jazz Award and the 2014 Bell Award)\, bassist Marty Holoubek and drummer Danny Fischer (who returned from living in New York\, bringing back all the experiences and stories that have nurtured his immense poetic and creative force over the past 8 years). \nVisit: www.reverbernation.com/remcokeijzerquartet \n“Remco Keijzer really shines\, with unique\, well-crafted compositions and soulful playing”. – Chris Potter

SUMMARY:Refraction
DESCRIPTION:Debut/CD Launch \nTrio ensemble Refraction melds the various colours of contemporary jazz composition and improvisation together into a compelling musical soundscape. Drawing inspiration from such artists as Tord Gustavsen\, Marcin Wasilewski\, Brad Mehldau and Weather Report\, the group’s material is centered around drummer and leader Chris Broomhead’s compositions and arrangements – pieces which allow space for collective ensemble interpretation\, interaction and improvisation\, but hold a clear vision that makes the journey the very destination the music is seeking. Joining Broomhead in this project are pianist Brenton Foster and acoustic bassist Jordan Tarento\, and their debut album As We Were was released in March (on Broomhead’s independent label Rare Colour Records).

SUMMARY:Barney Mcall’s Non-Compilance Trio (Sydney/Melbourne)
DESCRIPTION:Pianist/composer Barney McAll has returned to Australia after he was awarded a one-year artist residency at the Peggy Glanville-Hicks House in Sydney\, where he is concentrating on composing\, then touring to Europe with U.S. groups later in the year.  During more than two decades in New York\, he has amassed a wealth of credits and diverse musical experiences\, including the Gary Bartz Quartet\, Fred Wesley\, The JBs\, Kurt Rosenwinkel\, Jimmy Cobb\, the late Dewey Redman\, and Sia. His NCT features longtime colleagues Philip Rex (bass) and Danny Fischer (drums)\, mainly performing new compositions written this year. Their appearance at Bennetts Lane in April was both dynamic and dazzling in the breadth – and sudden leaps – of musical territory explored. \n“McAll is partial to unleashing surprises himself\, whether they be radical dynamic shifts – such as suddenly reducing a solo to the merest trickle of notes against thrumming bass and whispered cymbal chatter – or just finding bewitchingly unexpected turns to take in developing a melody. Masterful.” – The Sydney Morning Herald \n“Trio number “Appletree”\, an apex of all-out funk\, brought the house down.” – Review of MIJF CD Launch\, John McBeath\, The Australian\, June 2015

SUMMARY:Barney McAll’s A.S.I.O. (Sydney/Melbourne)
DESCRIPTION:Pianist/composer Barney McAll’s A.S.I.O. (Australian Symbiotic Improvisers Orbit) group features tenor saxophonist Julien Wilson and guitarist Stephen Magnusson (who are both on McAll’s new album\, Mooroolbark\, on ABC Jazz)\, together with bassist Philip Rex and drummer Danny Fischer. In addition to pieces from that album\, they will also perform ever more new material written especially for the ensemble. Primarily these new pieces will utilize unorthodox intervallic ideas with roiling harmonic underpinnings. As always\, McAll refuses to stand still as a composer\, and he is constantly trying to explore new concepts. \n“Pianist and composer Barney McAll’s ASIO quintet presented a concert from his new album\, “Mooroolbark”. These sophisticated compositions from his new album\, Mooroolbark\, were interpreted brilliantly by saxophonist Julien Wilson (and) Stephen Magnusson on guitar” – Review of MIJF CD Launch\, John McBeath\, The Australian\, June 2015

DESCRIPTION:Tenor saxophonist Wilbur Wilde is a widely under-rated figure from the 1980s and 90s jazz scene\, leading a dynamic and exciting ensemble at key venues in Melbourne and interstate\, and helping to broaden the jazz audience. He has reformed the classic line-up in recent years\, with Eugene Ball (trumpet)\, Sam Keevers (piano)\, Ben Robertson (bass) and Mike Jordan (drums) complementing his own ‘tough tenor’ sound\, and mainly performing the wonderful repertoire of Texan tenor saxophonist Billy Harper\, who toured here in 1992 and 1998.

He has also worked with James Morrison\, Don Burrows\, Judy Bailey\, and Bob Barnard\, as well as internationals such as Joe Williams\, Eartha Kitt and Joe Newman. In this special concert\, Adam Simmons leads his acclaimed trio in a tribute for the recently deceased US saxophonist\, Ornette Coleman. Origami\, with masterly technique\, embraces some of the most vital aspects of jazz tradition and yet has an utterly contemporary relevance.
