Christopher Hale “Archeopsychic” (Melbourne/Sydney) – Premiere

Beautiful, mysterious, ritualistic and powerful music with emotional melodies and a complex, absorbing rhythmic spiritualism. Joining Hale are a group of close friends, all rhythmic masters and exciting improvisors: James McLean (drumset), Leigh Fisher (electronic drums), Theo Carbo (guitar) and in a special appearance from Sydney, saxophonist/percussionist Sam Gill.

Hilary Geddes Quintet – debut

Young Sydney guitarist/composer Hilary Geddes is the 2019 recipient of the Jann Rutherford Memorial Award to assist the career of a young woman jazz instrumentalist. This Award is enabling this tour, and will facilitate her debut album of all-originals.

Nat Bartsch ‘Lullaby’ Sextet & Melbourne Amplified Strings

Melbourne pianist Nat Bartsch composes ethereal, gentle music that explores the space between jazz and classical genres. In 2017 Nat became a mother and launched her ‘Lullaby Project’, inspired by Max Richter’s Sleep and the children’s genre-crossing of the Teeny Tiny Stevies. Influenced by music therapy research and her son’s stages of development, Nat composed a series of pieces designed to encourage babies to sleep. Equally importantly, the music is intended to be soothing for adults—for if the whole family…

Dave Wilson Quintet (New Zealand/Melbourne) – debut

American tenor saxophonist and clarinetist Dave Wilson debuts for the MJC, joined by Eugene Ball (trumpet), Geoff Hughes (guitar), Tamara Murphy (bass) and Miles Henry (drums). Based in New Zealand since 2016, Dave built his career in Los Angeles in jazz, world music, and commercial music.

Niran Dasika

Niran Dasika’s Banff Quartet (Melbourne/Adelaide – premiere

Sun 22nd December @ 8:30 pm - 11:00 pm

For this performance Dasika will be collaborating with fellow Banff Centre alumni Flora Carbo (alto sax) and Adelaide drummer Kyrie Anderson, joined by Sam Anning (bass) to explore the legacy of the chordless quartet in Australia and abroad. They will perform originals by Dasika and Carbo, as well as some material by the late David Ades and Scott Tinkler.

The Melbourne Jazz Co-operative is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting original live jazz performance by established and emerging artists in Melbourne.

Since 1983 our objectives have been to increase the exposure of contemporary jazz performance by making it accessible to audiences, and to provide award waged performance opportunities for emerging and established artists. Read more about how we are funded.
