Dave Wilson Quintet (New Zealand/Melbourne) – debut
Sun 15th December @ 8:30 pm - 11:00 pm$15 – $20
American tenor saxophonist and clarinetist Dave Wilson debuts for the MJC, joined by Eugene Ball (trumpet), Geoff Hughes (guitar), Tamara Murphy (bass) and Miles Henry (drums). Based in New Zealand since 2016, Dave built his career in Los Angeles in jazz, world music, and commercial music. His recent jazz recordings include: On the Face Place (2017, SkyDeck Music) an album by CSPS Ensemble, a collective of Macedonia’s leading jazz musicians and featuring his tenor playing and a number of his compositions; In Passing (2017, SkyDeck Music), a duo project of original music for clarinet/bass clarinet and oud with Gabe Lavin; and SLANT (2019, pfMENTUM), a project exploring the intersections of classical and jazz avant-gardes with American pianist and new music specialist Richard Valitutto. A lecturer at the New Zealand School of Music–Te Kōkī at Victoria University of Wellington, Dave has quickly established himself as a leading musician in New Zealand, having performed as featured artist at the Tauranga Jazz Festival, as a guest artist and clinician at University of Auckland Clarinet Weekend, and throughout the country with the Rodger Fox Big Band.
The Dave Wilson Quintet project draws on Dave’s broad experience, exploring modes of composition and improvisation flowing out of bebop, modal jazz, the avant-garde, and the maqam traditions of the Middle East. The new originals composed for this project engage with the sounds of human and natural environments, expressed in the context of the individual and collective improvisation of the members of the quintet.
