Featuring some of Melbourne’s best improvisers, the music revolves around open compositional forms and specific rhythmic material. This is designed to facilitate structural and thematic improvisations that rely less on genre-specific references and more on the culmination of voices in the ensemble. Rootin’ Tootin’ consists of Eugene Ball (trumpet), Matt Hoyne (guitar), Sam Anning (double bass), and Lewis Pierre (drums ).
Dasika premiered this project with the MJC at the start of 2021, combining acclaimed pianist Andrea Keller and the then recently migrated emerging bass virtuoso Helen Svoboda (recipient of 2020 Freedman Jazz Fellowship, and the AAO’s ‘Pathfinder’ Music Leadership program for 2020/2021). They have developed since that premiere, and will present a concert of contemplative, minimalist new compositions.
