The Jazzlab 27 Leslie Street (off Brunswick Street), Brunswick, VictoriaDur-é Dara (percussion), Jenny Ruth Barnes (voice), Scott McConnachie (soprano & alto saxophones) and Ren Walters (guitar) are interested in making adventurous music with visiting expatriate Samuel Hall (drums, percussion) the night before he leaves Melbourne, returning to life in Europe where he has been based over the past 5 years, in Spain and, again, Berlin.
Tony Gould and Carl Mackey (with guest Stephen Magnusson)
The Jazzlab 27 Leslie Street (off Brunswick Street), Brunswick, VictoriaTony Gould's latest duo album, To Begin, at the Beginning, is with alto saxophonist Carl Mackey (originally from Perth, and a longtime collaborator of trumpeter Mat Jodrell). Recorded by Mal Stanley for ABC Jazz, it features all-new originals by Gould, plus William Walton's "Touch her Soft Lips". For this concert, they will be joined on some tunes by guest guitarist Stephen Magnusson.
Jamie Pregnell Quartet (Hobart/Perth/Melb) – Debut
The Jazzlab 27 Leslie Street (off Brunswick Street), Brunswick, VictoriaFor this concert Jamie Pregnell will re-unite with Julien Wilson (tenor sax), Sam Anning (double bass), and, from Perth, Ben Vanderwal (drums), collaborators from his first recording 'Sleepy Town', in preparation for a recording session for his next album. They will perform originals from 'Sleepy Town' and new compositions.
Monty Shnier Quintet – Debut
The Jazzlab 27 Leslie Street (off Brunswick Street), Brunswick, VictoriaThis quintet features some of the most impressive emerging talents on the local scene, with Ashley Ballat (trumpet), Rob Simone (alto saxophone), Hector Harley (tenor saxophone), Matt Steele (piano), Ollie Cox (drums), and Monty Shnier (double bass). This performance will directly follow a recording session for Shneir’s next album.
Tony Gould’s birthday celebration featuring John Hoffman (NSW)
The Jazzlab 27 Leslie Street (off Brunswick Street), Brunswick, VictoriaFor this occasion, he is joined by long-time colleagues Ben Robertson (double bass) and Tony Floyd (drums) to play two sets with different combinations of guests, who include Angela Davis (alto saxophone), Michelle Nicolle (vocals) and Carl Mackey (tenor saxophone), as well as the masterful veteran John Hoffman (trumpet and flugelhorn), who is based in northern NSW.
