Hector Harley Quartet – Debut

Tenor saxophonist Hector Harley is bringing his new quartet to The Jazzlab for the very first time, performing two sets of original contemporary music accompanied by some of Melbourne’s most in demand “next gen” musicians: James Bowers (piano), Monty Shnier (double bass) and Lewis Pierre (drum kit).

Matt Hoyne’s Ghost Songs and Human Songs

Guitarist Matt Hoyne brings a new quintet to the MJC Series at The Jazzlab to present a collection of original music to be performed by a stellar line-up of Melbourne’s most creative improvisers. Collaborating with Matt Hoyne (guitar) are Niran Dasika (trumpet), Flora Carbo (alto saxophone), Sam Anning (bass) and Lewis Pierre (drums).

Kingston/Schwing/Houston/Robb (Tasmania) – Debut

The Jazzlab 27 Leslie Street (off Brunswick Street), Brunswick, Victoria

Kingston/Schwing/Houston/Robb is a new quartet of Tasmanians led by guitarists Damien Kingston and Julius Schwing, along with Hamish Houston on double bass and Tom Robb on drums. The group primarily explore Damien and Julius’s original compositions, which are vehicles for their uncanny ability to sound like one giant guitar together.

Katie Noonan: Solo

(The MJC Series is interrupted by this concert) Katie Noonan (vocals) will be exploring songs from across her career in a stripped-back setting.

Puza/Banks Quartet

The Jazzlab 27 Leslie Street (off Brunswick Street), Brunswick, Victoria

The dynamic blend of modern jazz and groove-based tunes crafted by co-leaders tenor saxophonist Julian Banks and guitarist Onur Puza will be realised with the outstanding and highly experienced rhythm team of Philip Rex on double bass and Felix Bloxsom on drums.

James O’Brien Quintet – Debut

Yet another rising talent from the fertile Perth jazz scene, pianist James O'Brien makes his MJC debut with an all- original program – featuring the premiere performance of his 'Toward Dawn Suite' – delivered by his dynamic new quintet. Joining James O'Brien (piano) are Jayden Blockley (tenor saxophone), Craig Fermanis (guitar), Umar Zakaria (double bass) and Luke Andresen (drums).
