A longtime composer and bandleader, Shnier ‘s compositions highlight the skill and voices of the improvisers he works with, whilst his melodies evoke the lyricism and drama of folk, jazz and classical music in equal measure.

As the recipient of an ABC Composer Commission, he recorded his debut album, Where the Blackwoods grow, released digitally last year through ABC Jazz.

This quintet features some of the most impressive emerging talents on the local scene, with Ashley Ballat (trumpet), Rob Simone (alto saxophone), 
Hector Harley (tenor saxophone), Matt Steele (piano), 
Ollie Cox (drums), and 
Monty Shnier (double bass). This performance will directly follow a recording session for Shneir’s next album.
