“It’s strikingly exhilarating” – NYC Jazz Record
Based in Brisbane completing a PhD in composition, Dutch saxophonist/composer/arranger Marike van Dijk had previously divided her time working and living between New York (moving to New York in 2011 for a Masters degree at NYU) and the Netherlands (where she has toured with several big bands, including the European Jazz Orchestra, Jazzorchestra of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam Jazz Orchestra, and New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra).
Stranded was written for the North Sea Jazz festival’s annual commission. The title refers to being Stranded in Australia as a result of Australia’s closed borders during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The music was inspired by the vision of what it would look like to be back on stage, sharing music with colleagues and audiences. This project was premiered at the North Sea Jazz festival 2022 and recorded live at the Bimhuis (Amsterdam), and is released being on Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records and ZenneZ.
Her cinematic style of composing mixes influences from jazz, classical and indie rock music. Marike van Dijk (alto & soprano sax) will be performing this work with Brett Williams (keys), Hugh Stuckey(guitar), Sam Anning (bass), and Perth drummer Ben Vanderwal.
