Francesca Naibo (Italy) / Ren Walters + Rabid Hawk

Sun 31 March @ 7:30 pm

$20 – $30
Rabid Hawk poster and Francesca Naibo

Guitar virtuoso Nash Lee moved to Melbourne from Byron Bay with Twelve Tone Diamonds around two decades ago, making a memorable impact with that band, other ensembles such as Murphy’s Law and Shannon Barnett Quartet, and his own groups (such as Rabid Hawk and Dressage). He was also a finalist in the National Guitar Jazz Awards at the 2007 Wangaratta Festival. After a break from performing, Lee made a welcome return to the jazz scene with in recent years, demonstrating that he is remains a creative soloist. In Rabid Hawk he combines with Julien Wilson (tenor saxophone), Charlie Rank (bass) and Sam Bates (drums) to perform Lee’s originals. To hear them is to experience the chemistry that can only come from decades of friendship and musical collaboration.

‘Lee’s playing gripped me where in one racing passage he tightened his lyrical sound, made the chord more dissonant and distorted, until he seemed to meet resistance in the air.’ —John Clare, SIMA, Nov. 2007

The second set presents the Australian debut of adventurous Italian guitarist Francesca Naibo performing a duo set with exploratory guitarist Ren Walters. A graduate in classical guitar and free improvisation, based in Milan, Naibo is focused on exploring sound in the divergent yet sonically similar fields of free improvisation, contemporary music and classical repertoire. She’s particularly interested in using both the acoustic and the electric nature of her instrument, adventuring from roaring drones till microscopic vibrations. She has worked with important composers like Helmut Lachenmann and George Lewis and she realized the transcription of the “Exercises in Futility” by and in collaboration with Marc Ribot, as well as releasing albums, her latest being “So Much Time”.
