Way out West (Melbourne/Sydney) – CD Launch
Thu 31st August @ 8:30 pm - 10:30 pm
Presented in collaboration with the Melbourne Improvisers Collective
Way Out West’s sound has been described as “utterly unique”, a quality which has earned the band international praise, as well as invitations to play some of the largest music festivals in the world including, Montreal Jazz Festival, Veneto Jazz Festival (Italy), and Takatsuki Jazz Festival (Japan). The band has also toured Korea, Japan, Chile, Norway, England, Italy, Australia and Canada, making it one of the most widely travelled jazz based exports Australia has produced.
The latest edition of the group features the Sydney-based koto virtuoso, Satsuki Odamura, and builds on the band’s long history of integrating Asian instrumentation and approaches in a contemporary setting that infuses these influences with irresistible West African influenced grooves and jazz inflected melodies.
Way Out West’s intriguing self-titled fourth album (on Jazzhead) follows their acclaimed 2010 album, The Effects of Weather (Jazzhead). The group comprises Peter Knight (trumpet/laptop/composition), Satsuki Odamura (koto), Paul Williamson (saxophones), Lucas Michailidis (guitar), Ray Pereira (percussion), Howard Cairns (acoustic bass) and James McLean (drums) replacing US-based Raj Jayaweera.
