Trumpeter Eugene Ball, with associate artists Andrea Keller, Stephen Magnusson, Tony Floyd and Tamara Murphy, will present a series of four jazz improvisation masterclasses at Melbourne Polytechnic, Fairfield Campus. The sessions will run from 10:30am – 12:30pm, Sundays March 5, 12, 19 and 26. The series is open to high school students of any instrument, but only twelve applicants can be accepted. A benefit for bassist, Andy Ross, will be held at the Lomond Hotel in Brunswick East on Saturday February 18 from 3pm. An integral player in Melbourne’s jazz and roots scenes, Andy has been largely out of action of late due to health challenges. Contributing bands include: Ultrafox, the Band Who Knew Too Much, the Syncopators, the Stretchopolitans, Virus, Alex Burns, Yolanda II Band, Sam Linton-Smith, the Four Scoops, and more. $20 ($15 concession) minimum contribution.
Iconic jazz club, Bennetts lane, is set to close its doors (until it moves to new digs) of February 8, 2017. The MJC has enjoyed and long and fruitful relationship with the club, and looks forward to its re-opening in the CBD at an unknown future date. Until then, the MJC will continue to present at a variety of venues across Melbourne.
